The first Barbary War was fought between 18, when President Thomas Jefferson dispatched the Marines to Tripoli, Libya, enshrined by the line in the Marine hymn about going “to the shores of Tripoli.” ![]() ![]() It’s the Barbary War, the first overseas battle the United States fought to stop North African Islamists from stealing American vessels and capturing and torturing their crews, who were held for outrageous ransoms. Sounds like the present global war on terror, but it’s not. The conflict leaves American leaders with no strategy, the country war-weary, and the high-minded political class never tires of saying that whatever the war is about, it’s not about religion. ![]() Muslim extremists wreak havoc by using unconventional warfare to entangle great Western powers in a clash of civilizations that sends chills through the American public. ![]()
